Dried Figs: Market Update

Mundus-Agri: Last week's rains have impacted the quality of the figs and supplies in export quality are expected to be more limited.

Figs burst open

Estimates for Turkey's dried fig production range at 92,000 mt. Last week's rains, coupled with high humidity, however, caused some fruits that were already laid out for drying to burst. This will limit supplies of figs in export quality, especially to the EU, where higher quality requirements prevail. Tariş, Turkey's fig association, has also issued purchasing prices for this year's crop.

The export season may be launched at the start of October.

The Aegean Exporters' Association is set to announce the starting date for the new season at the next meeting on Thursday. Expectation is that the new season will be launched at the start of October. Exports are meanwhile declining steadily in the final weeks of the current season. Weekly exports recently only reached 570 mt, which is much less than the 944 mt shipped in the same week last year. Total exports for the season range at 64,614 mt, which is down on last year's 66,928 mt.
