US Pistachios, Market Update
The 2022/2023 American pistachio crop was a record-breaker, with shipments totaling 901.6M pounds (410,000 MT). This represents an almost 8% increase over the previous year and the highest shipment number ever.
Key markets for American pistachios remain domestic at 28%, Europe at 22%, and Asia (China/HK) at 30%. Other important markets include the Middle East and Africa at 15%.
While there will be adequate supplies of pistachios this year, there will be a processing capacity limitation for early shipments. With very little carry-in and a crop that was 7-10 days later than last year, everyone is looking for September and/or 1st half of October shipments. Expect shipments prior to mid-October to be difficult to secure.
Market prices currently remain relatively flat, but have moderated from 2 weeks ago due to rumors of a large crop.
The pistachio industry is working to diversify its markets beyond the top three, such as China/HK. This is a positive development, as it will reduce the industry's reliance on a single market.
The industry is also facing a processing capacity limitation for early shipments. This is due to a combination of factors, including low carry-in and a later crop. Buyers should expect shipments prior to mid-October to be difficult to secure.
