Currants

Currants

Currants are mainly produced along the northern and western coasts of Greece in the Peloponnese region.

Vostizza currants are grown and produced only on the hills and mountains surrounding Aeghion. The microclimate of the region and rich soil contribute to the distinctive texture and flavour of Vostizza.

Whilst Greece remains the dominant source of currants, we can also offer currants from South Africa and USA (California).

Raisins

Raisins

Raisins are grown all over the world, but a large proportion of those sold in the UK are from the fresh grape variety known as Thompson Seedless.

Turkish raisins are grown in the area surrounding İzmir, where over 20 factories are set up to pack and export the fruit. The crop gets harvested at the end of August to the beginning of September.

As for USA raisins, they tend to be grown in and around the Californian city of Fresno. Traditionally, the UK imports Californian Thompson Seedless raisins or Golden Raisins. California is the largest growing region of raisins in the world.

South African raisins are grown in the province of Uppington. The climate and soil surrounding the Orange River are ideal for growing grapes, and their superior quality of Golden Raisins is preferred in the UK.

Sultanas

Sultanas

Sultanas are made from green seedless grapes, particularly the Thompson Seedless variety.

Unlike raisins, sultanas are typically coated in an oil-based solution prior to drying to speed up the process. For this reason, they are often lighter in color than raisins and currants.

In Australia, some sultanas are made without the drying solution. These grapes take longer to dry — up to three weeks — and are dark brown in color. They are often referred to as “natural” sultanas.

In the US, sultanas are referred to as “golden raisins” or “sultana raisins.” These grapes are treated with a preservative called sulfur dioxide to retain the lighter color of the grape.

Sultanas are typically smaller than raisins and are sweeter, juicer and lighter in color than both raisins and currants.
